Do you suffer from back pain? You’re not alone! In fact, an estimated 80% of people will experience some type of back pain at some point in their lives, and according to the American Chiropractic Association, half of all workers experience back pain symptoms each year – so much that back pain ranks as the number-two reason why people see a doctor. And while sometimes the cause of back pain is from a known injury, there are other times when the reason for pain isn’t as obvious, and the culprit may be other parts of the body such as the feet and hips. Here’s why…

The Body’s Intricate Network

You know the song…” The hip bone’s connected to the backbone, the back bone’s connected to the neck bone…”

Within the machine that is the human body, the spine is the foundation that supports an intricate network of tendons, ligaments, and nerves – all of which work together to help the body function.  So, when there is an issue with another part of the body, i.e., the feet and hips, it can negatively impact the spine.

How the Feet & Hips Affect Your Back

At Burghealth Chiropractic and Wellness, we often diagnose and treat back pain that has stemmed from the feet and/or hips through a wide range of chiropractic care services. Here are some of the more common ways the feet and hips can affect the back…

  • An abnormal hip motion can cause an individual to plant the foot down in a way that causes foot pain, tendinitis, and tears of the tendons, muscles, or ligaments.
  • Hips that are in an abnormal position tend to be tight on one side and can cause a condition called “short leg”. This can lead to a tendency to put additional outward pressure on the feet.
  • An abnormal hip or gluteal function can lead to an overuse of the lower leg muscles to compensate for the lack of movement in the upper leg muscles.
  • The primary foot muscles are located between the knee and ankle.
  • After a foot or ankle injury, there is a natural tendency to put more pressure on the uninjured foot or ankle. This compensation will alter the position of the back and hips and can lead to significant pain in the back as well as other potential issues.
  • Individuals who wore a cast or boot or used crutches after an injury tend to shift movements which can lead to pain in the upper back and lower back and hips.
