The term “wellness” means different things to different people, but to us, it is the act of practicing healthy habits (every day!) to achieve optimal physical and mental health. It is the difference between surviving vs. thriving and is what leads us to a state of good health. At Burghealth Chiropractic and Wellness, we believe in the power of wellness and offer a wide variety of services that allow our clients to attain this goal. Here we offer a broad overview of wellness and why it is important.  

What are the dimensions of wellness? 

Wellness is complex and multidimensional, and according to some professionals, there are up to 12 components that comprise the wellness model! To keep things simple, we will refer to the big three…mental, physical, and nutritional.

Mental wellness is a broad term that encompasses emotional, intellectual, social, and occupational wellness. This is where your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors come into play and dictate how you adapt to anxiety, life changes, and times of distress.

Different ways to improve mental wellness include:

  • Self-care meditation
  • Reflection
  • Being mindful
  • Maintaining an overall positive attitude
  • Accepting your emotions (yes, even those ugly ones)
  • Building and maintaining strong social relationships
  • Maintaining a healthy balance with work and family
  • Giving yourself ample “ME” time
  • Staying in the moment
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Adopting positive coping mechanisms to manage stress

Physical wellness is about keeping your body in optimal condition and engaging in normal physical activities without pain. Of course, the level of “normal” physical activity is different for everyone. Someone who hits the gym just a few times a week will not perform at the same level as a professional athlete.

Different ways to improve physical wellness include:

  • Regular physical fitness (strength and cardiovascular)
  • Blood work (physiology)
  • Maintaining healthy levels of fat
  • Staying active throughout the day
  • Practicing self-control
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Listening to your body
  • Recognizing signs of injury
  • Chiropractic care
  • Physical therapy

Nutritional wellness goes hand in hand with physical wellness in that it helps maintain a healthy body. Never underestimate the importance of maintaining a healthy diet! After all, you are what you eat (and drink!)

Different ways to improve nutritional wellness include:

  • Limiting consumption of artificial sweeteners, preservatives, unhealthy fats, sugar, salt, and alcohol
  • Avoiding cigarettes, drugs, excess prescriptions, and heavy metals (i.e., water, antiperspirant, paint, chemicals, and environmental toxins)

Wellness is important because it impacts nearly every aspect of everyday life! Physical wellness allows you to move your body without pain and to perform at your best. Mental wellness allows you to react appropriately to stress, process negative feelings, and experience optimism and joy when times are good.
