At Burghealth Chiropractic & Wellness, we offer the most innovative chiropractic treatments on the market – one of which is deep tissue laser therapy. Here we take a closer look at this popular treatment for pain relief.

What is deep tissue laser therapy?

Deep tissue laser therapy is an innovative medical treatment that uses focused light to stimulate the process called photobiomodulation or PBM- where photons enter the tissue and interact with the cytochrome c complex with mitochondria. The interaction triggers a series of biological events that provide the following benefits:

  • Increased cellular metabolism
  • Decreased pain
  • Reduced muscle spasm
  • Improved microcirculation to injured tissue

This treatment is FDA-approved and provides patients a non-invasive, non-pharmacological alternative for pain relief.

Common Questions About Deep Tissue Laser Therapy

Is deep tissue laser therapy painful?

Not at all! The laser therapy is administered directly on the skin, and patients will feel a soothing, warming effect almost immediately. When it goes deep into the tissue, some patients may feel a tingling effect. During the treatment, the practitioner will be moving the laser head back and forth over the tissue in a grid pattern to maximize the therapeutic effect. We often incorporate stretching or gentle range of motion exercises into our treatment sessions.

How long does a session last?

Fortunately, treatments are quick and last about three to ten minutes depending on the size, depth, and acuteness of the condition being treated. Our high-power lasers can deliver a lot of energy in a small amount of time, allowing therapeutic dosages to be achieved quickly.

How many sessions will I need?

The frequency of treatments will depend on each individual patient, the nature of his or her condition, and the response to treatments. The benefits of laser therapy are cumulative, and therefore, we recommend our patients receive anywhere from six to 12 sessions with two to three treatments per week and gradually decrease as symptoms start to subside.

What kind of laser is used?

At Burghealth Chiropractic & Wellness, we use a Class IV laser (one of the most powerful lasers on the market!) that provides more energy to deep structures. One of the most powerful Class IV lasers on the market for deep tissue therapy, our laser has six different attachment heads with adjustable power ranging from 5W to 40W.

Most lasers on the market are considered Class III lasers and advertise that they can penetrate 2 ½ inches into deep structures. Great, but what they don’t tell you is that it would take 50 minutes to do this! Our Class IV laser can go that same depth in just three to five minutes! It is important to note that on smaller structures, such as the hands and wrist, we decrease the power and switch to a smaller attachment head for more accurate precision.

What conditions does deep tissue laser therapy treat?

Deep tissue laser treatment can be used to treat both chronic and acute pain, however, certain chronic ailments may need additional forms of therapy as well. Common conditions treated by deep tissue laser include:

  • TMJ
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Elbow & joint pain
  • Back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Soft tissue damage
  • Plantar Fasciitis
