Working from home is a big part of our “new normal,” and while it has many benefits (hello flexibility!) it also has a few drawbacks, one of which may be nagging pain in the neck, shoulders, and especially the back. The good news is that this pain can easily be treated and managed by making a few adjustments to how you sit, stretching, chiropractic care, and more.

Common Work from Home Conditions

At Burghealth Chiropractic & Wellness, we’ve seen a dramatic increase over the past year in the number of patients suffering from the following conditions as a direct result of working from home and not having the proper desks and chairs to support the many hours of sitting.

  • Stiff neck

  • Tense or sore shoulders

  • Joint pain

  • Mid and lower back pain

Suffering from back pain caused by hours upon hours of working from home? We can help! Call Burghealth Chiropractic & Wellness at (727) 289-9148 to learn more!

Tips to Reducing Pain Associated with Working from Home

Sit correctly. When you’re sitting at a desk or counter, the chair must be the right height. Your arms should be angled slightly down towards the keypad. Avoid sitting on the sofa because it will force your neck to tilt down and put a strain on your neck and shoulder muscles. This could also result in headaches and backaches.

Angle your arms. When sitting, make sure your chair is high enough so your arms are at a slight downward angle. If your desk surface is too high, your arms will be angled up and your shoulders will constantly be in a scrunched position. Doing this for several hours a day can result in pain and discomfort, thus increasing tension in the shoulders.

Take breaks periodically. We can’t stress the importance of how getting up and moving around can release tension and relieve aches! If you have a fitness or Apple watch, it’ll remind you. If you don’t, set a timer on your computer and take a quick break every hour. Take a walk around the block, stretch, do some laundry (standing while you fold!), or anything that will get you moving for a few minutes.

Stop by your local drug store. To temporarily relieve pain, take over-the-counter pain meds such as Tylenol or Aleve, or use icy hot creams such as Bio Freeze or Miraflex to reduce inflammation.
